What Is Ylang-Ylang And Where Does It Come From?

Ylang-Ylang oil is made from the flowers of a herb called Cananga Odorata. Cananga Odorata is a tropical tree, native to many Asian countries, northeast Australia, Polynesia and Madagascar. The Ylang-Ylang, or Cananga Odorata, is a plant, and is characterized by drooping branches and bright green leaves. Along the green stems, stalks grow, from which large amounts of yellow-green flowers bloom. These yellow-green flowers dangle from the stalks, and they are highly fragrant. The flowers also produce green fruits, which grow in clusters, and they turn black when ripened. Cananga Odorata produces strongly-scented flowers with large, curved petals. It is from these blooms that Ylang-Ylang is extracted. Steam distillation is used to extract Ylang-Ylang essential oil. There are three recognised grades (1, 2 and 3) depending on when the ylang-ylang oil was obtained. Grades 1 and 2 are normally used in perfumery, and grade 3 is reserved for pure essential oil used in aromatherapy. Ylang-Ylang has 2 main chemical components, which are Germacrene and caryophyllene, which are part of the sesquiterpenes group. The Ylang-Ylang flower has been used for centuries in perfumes, religious ceremonies, aromatherapy, and wedding events. The essential oil produced from this blossom is just as versatile.
